One of the things that I love about living in Utah is that we have lots of
lakes, but that also presents a unique circumstance where people can be
injured. In order to drive a boat on the water, you don't have to have a
particular license, you just have to be 16 years old. That means we have
teenagers out driving boats, we have people who are intoxicated driving
boats, and there are very serious injuries that can occur when there is a
collision or when the equipment that is involved in boating fails.
I think the thing that's important to remember about boating accidents is
that very often people think that the injuries that occur as a result of
those are not as serious as they are, in perhaps like an auto accident, and
the reverse is actually true. People can sustain extremely serious injuries
because they're not belted in, because there are people who are in the
water and who are not in a vehicle sometimes when they're injured.
Many of the injuries occur because the equivalent of a pedestrian in the
water, a swimmer, is struck by a boat or some other object. All of those
types of circumstances can produce really severe injuries, perhaps injuries
that are worse than what you might have if you were belted into a seat belt
in a car.
